Walking and panoramic trails
Promenade hike through Brixen
The walk through Brixen starts at the historic Adlerbrücke bridge. From there, follow the beautifully designed horse–drawn carriage tracks alongside the Eisack River. Passing the confluence of the Rienz and Eisack rivers, the route continues through shaded avenues and up to the Maria im Sand pilgrimage church. Via the Karlspromenade and the Psalmenweg, you will return to Stufels, Brixen’s oldest district. This leisurely circular walk is approximately 6.7 kilometres long and offers the perfect opportunity to experience Brixen in all its diversity.
From Brixen to Neustift Monastery
The hike starts in the picturesque district of Stufels and follows the Eisack River upstream, passing through blossoming orchards and vineyards. The almost flat trail takes you to the impressive Augustinian Monastery of Neustift, one of the most important in South Tyrol, in about an hour. As you walk, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the cultural landscape and experience the way in which history and nature merge in this region.

Seven–Church Trail: A spiritual journey through time on the Pfeffersberg
This 11–kilometre circular hike takes you through the gentle slopes of the Pfeffersberg and past seven historic churches located above Brixen. Starting at the historic ‘Wirt an der Mahr’ inn, you will pass the churches of St Jakob, St Klemens, St Johann, St Nikolaus, St Vitus, St Cyrill and St Ulrich, all of which are surrounded by idyllic nature. As well as offering cultural insights, the route provides impressive views of the surrounding mountain landscape. This hike is a treat for all senses, especially in spring when the trees are in bloom or in autumn when they change colour.
Gereuther Höfeweg: insights into the lives of mountain farmers
The Gereuther Höfeweg is a 5.5–kilometre circular trail that provides an insight into the lives of the mountain farmers on the Pfeffersberg. As you walk, you will pass several traditional farms, including the Feichterhof, Gruberhof and Zehrehof. There are drinking fountains, breathtaking viewpoints and secluded picnic spots along the route where you can take a break. This route is particularly recommended in spring and autumn, when you can enjoy spectacular views of Brixen and the mountains in the distance.
Keschtnweg: Hiking through chestnut groves and cultivated landscapes
The Keschtnweg, also known as the Chestnut Trail, is a 90–kilometre long–distance hiking trail that can be completed in several stages. Starting at the Augustinian monastery of Neustift near Brixen, it winds through picturesque landscapes of vineyards and chestnut groves, leading hikers to the Rittner Hochplateau, Terlan and Vilpian. The Keschtnweg offers a unique experience of nature, particularly in autumn when the chestnuts are ripe. As you hike, you can purchase regional products directly from farms and discover cultural sights.
Summit and mountain tours
To the Schrüttenseen lakes - a natural idyll in the Schalder valley
This moderately challenging hike takes you through the pristine Schalderer Valley, one of the more secluded areas around Brixen. Starting from the Schalderer car park, the trail leads steadily uphill alongside a rushing stream through shady forests. After around 6.3 kilometres, you will arrive at the picturesque Schrüttenseen lakes, which are nestled amongst alpine roses, Swiss stone pines and boulders. This is an ideal place to take a break, especially on hot summer days, where you can enjoy a delicious snack and a refreshing dip in the crystal–clear water.
Circular hike around the Peitlerkofel
The circular hike around the Peitlerkofel in the Puez–Geisler Nature Park offers a unique natural experience. Starting at the Würzjoch pass, the trail leads through gentle alpine meadows to the Peitlerscharte pass, continuing to the Göma–Joch pass via the Peitlerwiesen meadows. Spectacular views of the surrounding Dolomite landscape open up along the way. At around 13 kilometres long and with an estimated walking time of 4 hours, this tour is a highlight for experienced hikers.
Dolomites Panorama Trail: Hiking on the Plose
The Dolomites Panorama Trail on the Plose offers magnificent views of the Dolomites, including the Peitlerkofel, Aferer and Villnösser Geisler peaks. Starting from the Kreuztal mountain station of the Plose cable car, the route leads via the Rossalm to the Gabler Hinteralm and Lake Wackerer. Passing through lush green alpine meadows and pastures along mostly wide paths, you can enjoy unique panoramic views every now and then. The Dolomites Panorama Trail is a wonderful circular hike for all the family on Brixen’s local mountain in the Eisack Valley.
